The main cause of skin cancer is prolonged and unprotected exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds, which damages the DNA in skin cells. Over time, this damage can cause the cells to grow uncontrollably and form cancerous tumors. People with fair skin, a history of sunburns, excessive sun exposure, or a family history of skin cancer are at higher risk. While other factors like exposure to certain chemicals or a weakened immune system can contribute, UV radiation remains the most significant and preventable cause of skin cancer.
