These tiny structures are like super-powered helpers that make your body absorbing nutrients from food.

Villi are finger-like bumps lining the small intestine, and microvilli are even tinier hair-like projections on the villi’s surface. Together, they massively increase the surface area of the small intestine—think of it like turning a small towel into a huge one to soak up more water. This extra surface area lets your body absorb way more nutrients, like sugars, proteins, and vitamins, from digested food.

Villi also have blood vessels and a lymph vessel inside, so nutrients can quickly enter your bloodstream or lymph system to fuel your body.

Microvilli, packed with enzymes, help break down food even further, making absorption super efficient. For example, when you eat a burger, villi and microvilli make sure your body grabs all the good stuff (like carbs and proteins) before it passes through. Without them, you’d miss out on tons of nutrients.
