Oxygen debt, also known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), refers to the amount of extra oxygen the body needs after intense physical activity to restore it to its resting state. During strenuous exercise, the body may not supply enough oxygen to the muscles fast enough, leading to anaerobic respiration and the buildup of lactic acid. After the exercise stops, the body continues to breathe heavily to repay this “debt” by replenishing oxygen levels in the blood and muscles, clearing lactic acid, and restoring energy stores like ATP and creatine phosphate. This process is essential for recovery and helps the body return to its normal metabolic state.
