The vaccine contains a killed, weakened, or small piece of the pathogen. Your body sees the vaccine ingredient as foreign and activates your immune system and your immune system creates antibodies that specifically recognize and destroy the germ if it ever enters your body. Your body keeps a record of the invader by producing memory B and T cells. If you’re exposed to the real germ later, your immune system remembers and fights it off quickly and effectively, preventing illness or reducing its severity.
