Michael Kimwele answered on 17 Jul 2025:

Smoking causes lung cancer primarily by damaging lung cells’ DNA through carcinogens in cigarette smoke, leading to uncontrolled cell growth and tumor formation. The smoke contains thousands of chemicals, many of which are known carcinogens, that can mutate and alter cell behavior. This damage accumulates over time with continued smoking, increasing the risk of developing lung cancer.
