0 Question: can a nail rust in a vacuum place Keywords: nails Asked by base20fen to Arnold, Edna, Elkana, Gliday, Jacinta, Michael, Mike, Mmboyi, Sally on 22 Jul 2025.
Jacinta Nzilani answered on 22 Jul 2025:
Hi there! ๐
โ No, a nail cannot rust in a vacuum.
๐งช Why? Rusting is a chemical reaction that happens when:
Iron (in the nail)
Water (or moisture)
Oxygen (from the air) …are all present.
๐งฐ But in a Vacuum: There is no air โ โ no oxygen
There is no moisture โ โ no water vapor ๐ Therefore, no rusting can occur.
๐ง Summary: A nail needs oxygen + water to rust. In a vacuum, these are missing, so the nail stays rust-free! โ ๐ฉ
