The sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system prepares the body for “fight or flight” responses. When it acts on the lungs, it causes the bronchi and bronchioles to dilate (widen). This bronchodilation allows more air to flow in and out of the lungs, improving oxygen intake and carbon dioxide removal. It also reduces mucus secretion and relaxes airway muscles, helping you breathe more efficiently during stressful or emergency situations.
