A person experiences breathing difficulties when climbing a mountain primarily due to reduced oxygen levels in the air at higher altitudes. This condition, known as hypoxia, makes it harder for the body to get enough oxygen with each breath. The thinner air at higher altitudes results from lower air pressure, meaning the same volume of air contains fewer oxygen molecules.
