In Type 1 diabetes, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to a severe deficiency in insulin. Insulin is crucial for regulating blood sugar levels by helping glucose move from the bloodstream into cells for energy or storage. When insulin is lacking, glucose builds up in the blood, causing hyperglycemia and disrupting glucose homeostasis. Synthetic insulin, when administered, acts like the body’s natural insulin by facilitating glucose uptake into cells, thereby lowering blood glucose levels and restoring glucose homeostasis.
