Hair turns white primarily due to a decrease or cessation of melanin production in hair follicles, the structures that produce hair. This is a natural part of the aging process, as melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, die off or become less active with age. However, other factors can contribute to premature whitening, including genetics, stress, vitamin deficiencies, and certain medical conditions.
